Türkiye Cotton Imports Increased By 12.52% QoQ and 65.41% YoY Basis

Cotton is an important crop in Türkiye, accounting for about 1% of the total exports of all the commodities exported from Türkiye. Agricultural commodities such as cotton, grown in Turkish lands, have the highest demand in the world. Perhaps the most highly recognized more refined quality of cotton is exported from Türkiye. Turkish cotton is demanded due to its softness and better quality of plush due to longer fibers. The high demand for cotton from Türkiye might’ve pushed imports to increase this year so far.

Türkiye’s Cotton Imports

Cotton exports from Türkiye amounted to $2.2 billion in 2021. On the other hand, the total of Türkiye’s cotton imports amounted to $3.7 billion in the same period. This indicates that despite Turkish cotton demand and high exports, the value of imported cotton is relatively higher.

The evaluated Türkiye’s import data above shows the yearly values of cotton imports in Türkiye, following the time period beginning from 2017 to 2021. The highest amount of cotton imports in Türkiye registered in the year 2021 with a total value of $3.71 billion, $1.1 billion higher than the previous year.

Türkiye’s Top Partners

According to the import data of Türkiye 2021, the top importing partners for Türkiye’s cotton are—the USA (15.3%), Brazil (13.7%), Uzbekistan (13.4%), Greece (13.1%), Azerbaijan (7%), Turkmenistan (6.7%), Pakistan (4.6%), Tajikistan (3.2%), India (3.1%), and Australia (2.7%).

Cotton Imports Trend

Türkiye imports 2022 so far shows that the total amount of cotton imports in Türkiye have amounted to $1.3 billion in the first quarter of 2022 and amounted to $1.4 billion in the second quarter of 2022. The imports in 2021 for the same period registered lower values imports.

The value of cotton imports in Türkiye amounted in comparative quarters in such manner: $677.9 million in the first quarter of 2021, $1 billion in the second quarter of 2021, $1.3 billion in the first quarter of 2022, and $1.4 billion in the second quarter of 2022.

The total increase in the imports of cotton for Türkiye on yearly basis shows a difference in value by $1.1 billion with a percentage increase of 65.4% and the total increase in Türkiye’s cotton imports on quarterly basis shows a difference of $164.4 million, with a percentage increase of 12.52%.
