Coal export business of Australia is raised by 4% during 2015-16 while it was reduced by 10% between 2012 and 2016. Japan, China, India and Korea are the Australia’s top coal export markets. Coal is Australia’s second largest export commodity and representing about one-half of energy export revenue. Coal production has doubled over the past two decades and continued investment in export capacity. From 2000 to 2010, coal production is up by 33% and domestic coal consumption is down by 15%.

Indonesia is the second largest coal exporter country in the world. Coal exports by country worth USD 12898 million during the year 2016 which represents 17.6 of the global coal exports. Coal is Indonesia’s one of the top export commodity. As per coal market report, Indonesia Exports of coal is declined by 12% during 2015-16. India, China and Japan are the main markets where Indonesia exports coal and together these countries buy more than half of the Indonesia’s coal.


Russia is also one of the largest coal export market. It recorded USD 8907 million from coal exports in 2016 which represents 12.1% of the global coal export sales. The country has increased the coal imports by 6% between 2012 and 2016 but it was reduced by 9% in terms of value. Korea, Japan, China and Turkey are the main coal export partners of Russia.

As per coal statistics, Japan, India, China and Korea are the world’s top coal importing countries and together they recorded approximately 58% of the global coal value. Japan stood as largest importer of coal with the imports of USD 15242 million registered during 2016 which represented 18.1% of the total’s output. The country has reduced the coal imports from other countries by 7% during 2015-16. Japan has imported coal from 18 countries of the world. Approximately 65% of the coal in Japan is imported from Australia only in 2016. As it is the largest coal import partner of Japan. India is the top coal importer country after Japan. India Coal Imports worth USD 12707 million during 2016 which represented 15.1% of the global coal imports. India has majorly imported coal from Australia and Indonesia with the value of 38.3% and 35.3% respectively. However, South Africa is also its largest import partner with the share (15.6%) in total coal imports. India coal imports are declined by 10% during 2015-16. Coal price in India is much lower than oil and gas. As reports from the Indian newspapers are showing that government is now more focused on the reduction of imported coal dependency.


China is third largest coal importing country. However, it is also the largest producer and consumer of coal in the world. Chinese coal imports worth USD 11510 million during 2016 which represents 13.7% of the global coal imports. Coal imports by country is reduced by 22% between 2012 and 2016 but it is raised by 14% during 2015-16. China Imports around half of the coal from Australia only.
