Africa is the 5th largest importer continent. According to Africa trade data, African countries purchased goods worth US$ 492 billion in 2018. Top 4 continents in terms of imports are Asia, Europe, North America and South America. Africa’s top imports at 6-digit level HS Code are medium oils & preparations, light oils & preparations, crude petroleum oil, medicament, motor cars, wheat, mobile phones and rice. Here is the list of top 10 African countries by imports with import statistics recorded in 2018


Top 10 African Countries by Imports



                            1.    South Africa

According to South Africa import data, the country purchased goods worth US$ 93,423 million in 2018. From Jan to Mar 2019, South Africa imported commodities valued US$ 66,440 million. South Africa main import commodities are crude petroleum oil, petroleum products, motor cars, mobile phones, automatic data processing machines and parts & accessories for tractors. South Africa largest import partners are China (18.3%), Germany (9.9%), United States (5.9%), Saudi Arabia (5.7%), India (4.1%), Nigeria (4.1%), United Kingdom (3.5%) and Thailand (3.1%).


                           2.    Egypt

Egypt purchased goods valued US$ 80,992 million in 2018. Egypt’s top imports are solar, crude petroleum oil, durum wheat, semi-finished products of iron or non-alloy steel, yellow corn, motor cars, liquefied butanes and frozen & boneless meat of bovine animals. Main Egypt import partners are China (14.2%), Saudi Arabia (7%), United States (6.7%), Russia (6%), Germany (5.1%), Italy (4.3%) and Turkey (4.1%).


                           3.    Morocco

Morocco import data shows that the country imported commodities worth US$ 51,251 million in 2018. Morocco’s main import products are mineral fuels & oils, machinery, vehicles, electrical machinery & equipment, plastics, cereals, aircraft & spacecraft and iron & steel. Top import partners of Morocco are Spain (15.8%), France (11.9%), China (9.8%), United States (7.9%), Italy (5.6%), Germany (4.9%) and Turkey (4.5%).


                           4.    Algeria

Algeria imports valued US$ 48,984 million in 2018. Main import commodities of Algeria are machinery, vehicles, electrical machinery & equipment, mineral fuels & oils, cereals, plastics, pharmaceutical products and articles of iron & steel. Algeria’s main import partners are China (18.1%), France (9.3%), Italy (8.2%), Germany (7%), Spain (6.8%), Turkey (4.4%), United States (4%) and South Korea (3.7%).


                           5.    Tunisia

The total value of Tunisia recorded US$ 36,460 million in 2018. It imported mineral fuels, electrical machinery & equipment, machinery, plastics, vehicles, iron & steel, cereals, pharmaceutical products, cotton and optical, medical equipment, etc. Tunisia’s main import partners are Italy (15.6%), France (15.1%), China (9%), Germany (8%), Turkey (4.5%), Spain (4.5%) and Algeria (3.6%).


                           6.    Kenya

Kenya’s imports valued US$ 21,059 million in 2018. According to Kenya import data, country’s main imports are medium oils & preparations, crude palm oil, wheat, flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel, semi-milled or wholly milled rice and motor cars. From Jan to Mar 2019, total Kenya imports valued US$ 12,599 million. Kenya’s top import partners are China (21.1%), India (10.5%), Saudi Arabia (9.8%), United Arab Emirates (8.4%), Japan (5.7%) and South Africa (3.7%).


                          7.    Angola

Angola is the 7th largest importing country in African continent. The country imported good worth US$ 17,376 million in 2018. Main imports of Angola are mineral fuels & oils, machinery, ships, boats & floating structures, electrical machinery & equipment, meat and vehicles. Angola’s main import partners are China (14.1%), Portugal (13.3%), Singapore (11.1%), Belgium (6.2%), Togo (5.8%) and United States (4.8%).


                          8.    Libya

As far Libya is concerned, it purchased commodities worth US$ 16,385 million in 2018. Libya’s main import commodities are motor cars, durum wheat, aeroplanes, parts of gas turbines and alloy pig iron & spiegeleisen. Top Libya import partners are Turkey (10.6%), China (9.8%), Italy (9.4%), South Korea (9.2%), Germany (6.8%), United States (5.3%), France (5%), Japan (4%) and Egypt (3.5%).


                          9.    Togo

Togo imported products worth US$ 12,929 million in 2018. According to Togo import data, the country’s largest import commodities are medium oils & preparations, light oils & preparations, motorcycles, motor cars, palm oil, coal and wheat. Togo’s main import partners are China (19.6%), France (10.8%), Japan (5.1%), Netherlands (5%), Ghana (4.1%), India (3.6%), Belgium (3.2%) and Saudi Arabia (3.2%).


                         10. Ghana

Ghana’s imports valued US$ 11,889 million in 2018. According to Ghana import data, the country imported motor cars, broken rice, cement clinkers, refined sugar, milled rice and trucks the most in the said year. Ghana’s main import partners are China (19.1%), United States (8%), Belgium (5.8%), India (5.7%), United Kingdom (5.1%), South Africa (3.4%) and Vietnam (2.9%).
