India’s fish exports totaled US$ 611 million in 2020 and US$ 485 million from Jan to Oct 2021. Due to Covid-19 restrictions in the first half of 2020, the supply chain was affected and fish exports from the country went down in Q1 and Q2. China remains the top importer country of Indian fish with a market share of 39% in 2020 and 22% in 2021 (till Oct month). Ribbonfish is the largest export species in India. The export of marine products stood at 13.93 lakh metric tons and was valued at INR 46,589 crores (US$ 6.73 billion) during 2018-19.

Top 10 Indian Fish Species Exported in 2020


India is home to a wide range of diverse and unique species of fish. They include marine fishes, brackish water fishes, and freshwater fishes in the areas of Bengal, Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean. Freshwater fishes consist of about 940 species which constitutes about 38% of the total Indian fish fauna.


Some of the popular fish species in India are Ribbon Fish, Croaker, Pomfret, Jack, and Sole. Among them, ribbon fish is largely exported by India, which accounted for 27.39% of total fish exports in 2020. Below given chart shows the dollar amount of India’s top 10 fish species exported in 2020.

Largest Importer Countries of Indian Fish


A reasonable share of Indian fish exports goes to China, followed by Thailand and Japan. Data of combined HS Codes 0301, 0302, 0303, and 0304 shows India shipped fish products worth US$ 239 million in 2020, which declined to US$ 106 million in the first ten months of 2021. However, the Indian fish market in Thailand and Japan grew as the values of Indian fish exports rose in 2021 as compared to the previous year.

Fish shipments from India depart majorly from Sea mode, which accounted for about 90% to total shipments during Jan-Oct 2021.
