What is CISFTA?
CISFTA or Commonwealth of
Independent States Free Trade Area is a free trade area between Russia,
Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Moldova and Armenia. The
agreement was signed between these countries after the breakup of Soviet Union in
1991.
Country-wise Analysis of CIS Trade Statistics
1. Russia

Russia enjoyed trade surplus
as it exports were higher than imports in 2016. It recorded USD 103229396000
balance in value, which declined from the previous year. Russia’s top import
products are – Machinery (18.68%), Electronic Equipment (11.55%), Vehicles
Other Than Railway or Tramway (8.41%), Pharmaceutical (4.76%) and Plastics
(4.17%). Russia’s top export products are – Mineral Fuels (62.84%), Iron and

2. Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan too experienced
positive balance in trade as its exports were higher than imports in 2016. It
recorded USD 11600544000 trade surplus, which declined from the previous year.
Kazakhstan’s top import products are – Machinery (18.32%), Electrical Equipment
(10.04%), Articles of Iron & Steel (8.46%), Vehicles Other Than Railway or
Tramway (6.61%) and Mineral Fuels (5.5%). Kazakhstan’s top export products are
– Mineral Fuels (67.72%), Inorganic Chemicals (6.76%), Iron & Steel
(5.44%), Copper (4.37%) and Ores, Slag & Ash (2.36%).

3. Ukraine

Ukraine experienced USD 610887000 trade surplus in 2016 as its exports were more than imports. Ukraine’s largest
import commodities are – Mineral Fuels (29.01%), Machinery (9.54%), Electrical
Equipment (7.18%), Plastics (5.58%) and Vehicles Other Than Railway or Tramway
(4.32%). And Ukraine’s largest export commodities are – Iron and Steel
(21.19%), Cereals (15.89%), Animal or Vegetable Oil (8.65%), Ores, Slag &

partners of Ukraine are – Russian Federation (20%), Germany (10.6%), China

4. Uzbekistan
Since 2012, Uzbekistan has
been recording trade deficit as its imports are more than exports. As per trade
statistics of CIS countries, Uzbekistan recorded USD -2047256000 trade deficit
in 2016. It mostly imports – Machinery, Vehicles Other Than Railway or Tramway,
Electrical Equipment, Pharmaceutical Products and Mineral Fuels. And the
